Fertilizing Magnolia Tree

Magnolia trees are native to North America. As native plants, they grow well and are not heavy feeders. While fertilization is not mandatory, it supports tree health and new growth. Routinely feeding trees also boosts flowering. Soil naturally becomes depleted with time, so fertilizing established trees replenishes the nutrients that are no longer available.

How to Fertilize Magnolia Tree

Feed Magnolias using a balanced fertilizer. Water-soluble products are easy to apply and can be included in a regular watering session. Follow the instructions on the packaging to avoid fertilizer burn and ensure the proper application. Apply organic mulch around the tree to provide additional nutritional support. Spread the mulch to cover the root system, but leave a space around the trunk.

Best Time To Fertilize Magnolia Tree

Initially feed Magnolia trees when planting. Topdress the soil with organic compost or manure to support the young plant. Fertilize established Magnolia trees in early spring. An early dose of fertilizer sets the tree up for a successful bloom cycle. You can continue to fertilize Magnolias throughout the growing season. Apply fertilizer about every six weeks from spring through fall.

Best Fertilizer For Magnolia Tree

A balanced fertilizer, e.g. 10-10-10 formula, provides all of the support Magnolia trees need. For ease of application, select a slow-release product to apply once in the spring. If your mature tree has not bloomed recently, use a fertilizer with increased phosphorus, which is the middle number in the ratio. Look for a product with a ratio like 12-24-12. Phosphorus helps flowering plants set buds. Test the soil pH before selecting a fertilizer. Magnolia trees prefer acidic soil, so you can choose a product to adjust the soil pH as needed.

Magnolia Tree Fertilizing Tips

  • Apply fertilizer in early spring and again about every six weeks through the end of the growing season, or use a slow-release product once in early spring.
  • Use a balanced fertilizer for acid-loving plants.
  • Water-soluble plant foods can be applied when watering the tree.
  • Topdress the soil with organic mulch.
