Showy springtime flowers make the Firestorm Rhododendron a beautiful addition to almost any outdoor space. Large flowers measure up to 3.5 inches across and are a deep red. The flowers bloom in clusters, creating an impressive display, and the wavy petals add even more dimension to the already stunning shrub. Expect flowers by late May.

The dense, compact form of this shrub makes it a good choice for a flowering hedge or foundation planting. The lime green foliage has a leathery texture and stays in place all year, providing consistent color. The Firestorm Rhododendron grows in zones 4 through 8.

Firestorm Rhododendron Care

This shrub is easy to maintain, but it thrives in acidic soil. Naturally acidic soil is ideal, but you can amend more alkaline soil when planting and use an acidic fertilizer annually each spring. Rhododendrons prefer moist soil, but they do not like wet feet. Water regularly after planting until the root system is fully established; thereafter, water during a drought to keep the plant healthy and growing. Plant the Firestorm Rhododendron in partial shade to partial sun.

Remove dead or damaged branches at any time. Prune the plant to thin the growth or remove crossed branches immediately after the flowers fade. Rhododendrons set next year’s flower buds during the previous summer, so do not prune after the buds emerge. Plants in frigid climates will do best when wrapped in landscape fabric during major winter storms.

Firestorm Rhododendron Spacing

The Firestorm Rhododendron is compact and reaches 3 to 4 feet tall and wide. Space shrubs 3 feet apart to create a dense hedge or foundation planting. Display the Firestorm Rhododendron in a container at least one-third larger than the root ball.
