Flame Red Seedless Grape is the red table grape to grow when crisp texture and clean, sweet flavor are the main goal. Vitis vinifera 'Flame Seedless' produces medium clusters of red seedless grapes in August, and trained vines are commonly kept about 4 to 6 feet tall with 6 to 8 feet of spread along a trellis. It is a better fit for warm southern gardens than many cool-climate grapes because it needs summer heat to color and sweeten properly. Our best results come from giving this vine the sunniest, warmest spot available.
Flame Red Seedless Grape Care
Plant Flame Red Seedless Grape in early spring after the ground is workable, or in fall in mild Zone 9 and 10 climates. Set the vine at the same depth it grew in its nursery pot, space plants 6 to 8 feet apart, and train each one onto a strong trellis, fence, or arbor in full sun with 6 or more hours of direct light daily. Loamy or sandy, well-drained soil with average moisture and a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 is preferred, and heavy wet soil should be corrected before planting. Deadheading is not needed, but dormant pruning from late winter into early spring is essential because grapes fruit best on properly managed young wood.
Growing Flame Red Seedless Grape
Flame Red Seedless Grape usually begins producing in 2 to 4 years, with the main harvest in August once the berries are fully red, sweet, and firm. Grapes do not ripen after picking, so harvest whole clusters only when the flavor is ready on the vine. Store unwashed clusters in the refrigerator and rinse right before eating, drying into raisins, juicing, or adding to fresh dishes.
Growing Flame Red Seedless Grape in Containers
Flame Red Seedless Grape can grow in a container for patios or small edible spaces if the pot is large, heavy, and paired with a sturdy support. Start with a 20 to 24 inch wide container, then repot or root-prune every 2 to 3 years in late winter before new growth begins. Container vines dry faster than in-ground vines, so steady watering and annual dormant pruning are especially important.
For container companions, use thyme, oregano, or lettuce plants for an easy edible arrangement. In a larger edible in-ground planting, pair Flame Red with fig trees or peach trees.
Watering Flame Red Seedless Grape
Water young vines deeply once or twice a week during dry weather so the root zone stays evenly moist but never soggy. Established vines handle brief dry periods better, but wilting leaves, stalled shoot growth, or shriveled berries mean the vine needs a deeper soak.
Feeding Flame Red Seedless Grape
Feed lightly in early spring with compost or a balanced fruit fertilizer, especially if growth was weak the previous season. Avoid heavy nitrogen because it can lead to too much leafy growth at the expense of fruit quality and ripening.
