Flavortop Nectarine Tree is grown for large red-orange nectarines with firm yellow freestone flesh and a sweet-tangy bite that works just as well fresh as it does in jars or baked desserts. Prunus persica var. nucipersica 'Flavortop' matures about 12 to 15 feet tall and wide, with pink spring blossoms before the August crop develops. Compared with many home orchard nectarines, it stands out for fruit size, clean pit separation, and a flavor that has more bite than plain sweetness. This is our favorite self-pollinating nectarine because it gives strong ornamental value before harvest season begins.
Flavortop Nectarine Tree Care
Plant Flavortop Nectarine Tree in early spring after the soil can be worked, or in fall in mild climates where winter settling is not a concern. Set the tree at the same depth it grew in the nursery container, space trees 12 to 15 feet apart, and choose a full sun location with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. Loamy, fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0 is best, and standing water around the root zone should be avoided. Prune in late winter to open the center and remove damaged wood. Early-summer fruit thinning helps the tree carry larger nectarines.
Growing Flavortop Nectarine Tree
Flavortop Nectarine Tree usually begins bearing in 2 to 4 years and needs about 750 chill hours for dependable cropping. Harvest in August, or when the fruit colors fully, gives slightly under gentle pressure, and releases with a light twist. Store ripe nectarines in the refrigerator for up to 2 to 3 weeks.
Growing Flavortop Nectarine Tree in Containers
Flavortop Nectarine Tree can be grown in a large container while young, though it performs best long term in the ground or in a half-barrel size pot with excellent drainage. Use a container at least 20 to 24 inches wide to start, then repot or root-prune every 2 to 3 years before growth resumes in spring. Container trees need steadier watering, annual pruning, and winter protection in colder parts of Zones 5 and 6.
For edible container companions, use basil plants, thyme, or strawberry plants around the rim of the pot. In the ground, pair Flavortop Nectarine with blueberry bushes or grape vines in a larger fruit garden.
Watering Flavortop Nectarine Tree
Water young trees deeply once or twice weekly during dry weather so moisture reaches the root ball and surrounding soil. Established trees need less frequent watering, but leaf curl from drought stress, small fruit, or premature fruit drop are signs the soil has become too dry.
Feeding Flavortop Nectarine Tree
Feed in early spring with a balanced fruit tree fertilizer or a slow-release formula, applying after the first season or once the tree is settled and actively growing. A second light feeding after fruit set may help support leaf color and crop development, but avoid late-season fertilizer because tender new growth is more vulnerable to winter injury.
