- USDA Growing Zones 7-9
- 5 Feet Tall
- 3 Feet Wide
- Full Shade to Partial Shade
Florida Sunshine Anise (Illicium parviflorum) is a hardy shrub that dazzles in the landscape all year. Its glossy leaves are a soft greenish yellow and grow along red-tinted stems. The evergreen shrub grows slowly, eventually reaching about 5 feet high and 3 feet wide. Plant it as a garden border or hedge for year-round color in your landscape.
Be sure to place Florida Sunshine Anise where you can enjoy its color and fragrance. The "Anise" part of its name represents the licorice-like scent of the shrub's late spring fruit. Although Florida Sunshine's fruit is not edible like the spice, it is a nice touch added to an already incredible shrub. The plant is resistant to most diseases and pests and handles heat of zones 7 through 9.
Florida Sunshine Anise Care
Plant Florida Sunshine Anise in shade or part shade and see its delicate leaves turn the golden chartreuse color. Dig a hole about two times wider than the container the plant comes in and water it well. Spread a 1- to 2-inch layer of mulch around the plant, but not up against its main stem. It needs average water and only slight pruning. Shape the plant as needed in early spring before the first new growth appears.
Florida Sunshine Anise Spacing
Create a colorful hedge with several Florida Sunshine Anise in your tropical, rustic or cottage landscape. Space the shrubs nearly 3 feet apart so they have room to grow together.
