Mature Height

Mature Spread
A delicate texture and vibrant green hue make the Foxtail fern a unique and welcoming addition to a landscape. The Asparagus densiflorus 'Myers' has upright plumes with dainty, needle-like foliage. The greenery is compact and appears as a fluffy mound. The branches bend and arch as they grow longer. Tiny white flowers bloom in the spring and transition into red berries by fall.
The height and delicate texture of the Foxtail fern create an impressive mass planting and almost look like an art installation. Use this clump-forming plant throughout a mixed bed to add height and contrast against more traditional blooming plants. Plant this fern in a window box or hanging basket for an unexpected and whimsical appearance.
Foxtail Fern Care
Plant the Foxtail fern in partial sun to shade. An area with 4 to 6 hours of sunlight is preferred, and afternoon shade is ideal. Use rich, moist, and well-drained soil. Give the fern water when the top few inches of soil are dry. Apply a balanced fertilizer every other month to encourage growth.
Remove dead or damaged growth as necessary. The Foxtail fern is a perennial in zones 9 through 11. It is semi-evergreen in areas with mild winter weather. In most areas, it is grown as an annual and can transition to a houseplant during the winter.
Foxtail Fern Spacing
Mature plants grow 2 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart in a landscape, or grow two plants in a 12-inch wide container.
