Attractive dark green foliage sets the stage for the rich pink to crimson blooms of the Frill Ride™ hydrangea that appear from spring through summer. These bold blooms also have uniquely frilly edges. The Frill Ride™ is a bigleaf hydrangea, known scientifically as Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Hokomabavii’. Flower panicles left on the shrub to dry after frost add stellar interest to the winter landscape or can be brought indoors to use in dried flower arrangements.
The Frill Ride™ hydrangea has a dense, compact habit that makes it an excellent candidate for small spaces like patio or container plantings. Unlike some shrubs, it does not get leggy, so there is no need to plant smaller specimens in front of it. It reblooms, demonstrates disease resistance, and has few maintenance requirements once site preparation and planting are done. The tidy habit of the Frill Ride™ makes it suitable for low hedges and mixed plantings.
Frill Ride™ Hydrangea Care
Plant the Frill Ride™ hydrangea in full sun in colder climates and part shade in hot regions. These plants prefer rich, well-drained soil and regular water, so plan to irrigate regularly during establishment and when weather is hot and dry. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch over the root zone for added protection. Like other hydrangeas, soil pH affects the color of this plant’s blooms. Acidic soil gives flowers a purple-violet hue, while alkalinity turns them pink. For maximum plant vigor, apply a balanced fertilizer lightly at regular intervals throughout the growing season.
The Frill Ride™ hydrangea flowers on old growth, so prune after blooming in late spring. Simply cut old flower heads back to the nearest node. Any cuts made after August 1 may reduce flowering the following year.
Frill Ride™ Hydrangea Spacing
This hydrangea is a compact shrub that only grows 2-3 feet tall and wide. Space shrubs 2-3 feet apart to form a low hedge, or give each hydrangea a bit more space in a mixed planting. For container growing, choose a planter with a diameter of at least 18 inches for the Frill Ride™.
