Frost® Peach Tree gives cooler-climate growers a sweeter shot at homegrown peaches, especially where peach leaf curl or spring weather has made older varieties harder to manage. Prunus persica 'Frost' produces red-blushed yellow peaches with golden-yellow flesh, sweet juice, and a semi-freestone to freestone texture suited for fresh eating, canning, pies, and cobblers. This self-fertile peach matures about 10 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide, staying easier to prune and harvest than a full-size orchard tree. Frost® Peach Tree is perfect for gardeners looking for a productive peach with stronger leaf curl resistance than many traditional backyard varieties.
Frost® Peach Tree Care
Plant Frost® Peach Tree in late winter or early spring while dormant, or in fall in mild winter regions, spacing trees 12 to 16 feet apart. Site in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct light, well-drained sandy loam or loam, and slightly acidic to neutral soil around pH 6.0 to 7.0. Prune annually in late winter or lightly after harvest in summer to thin the canopy, remove damaged wood, and keep fruiting branches within reach.
Growing Frost® Peach Tree
Frost® Peach Tree typically begins bearing in about 2 to 3 years after planting, with fruit ripening in mid to late summer depending on climate. It needs about 700 chill hours and grows best outdoors in zones 5 to 9, with hardiness that makes it useful in colder peach-growing regions. Give the tree room for a spreading canopy and thin young fruit so the remaining peaches size up well. Grow it outdoors year-round because it needs winter dormancy and direct sun to crop properly.
Growing Frost® Peach Tree in Containers
Frost® Peach Tree can be grown in a large container, especially when kept pruned as a small patio tree. Use a 20- to 25-gallon pot with drainage holes, refresh the potting mix regularly, and leave open space around the trunk to plant shallow-rooted companions. Strawberry plants and marigold work well as edge-of-pot companions. Landscape plantings can include allium and dianthus to support pollinator activity around spring bloom.
Watering Frost® Peach Tree
Water deeply when the top 2 inches of soil begin to dry, paying close attention during bloom, fruit sizing, and hot summer weather. Leaves that droop in afternoon heat and peaches that stay small can mean the soil is too dry.
Feeding Frost® Peach Tree
Feed Frost® Peach Tree in late winter or early spring before bloom with a balanced fruit-tree fertilizer. Avoid heavy feeding late in the season, since late tender growth can be more vulnerable to winter cold and may reduce the tree’s readiness for dormancy.
