Garden Girls® Material Girl Phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Material Girl') turns heads with fuchsia-purple flower clusters perched on sturdy stems. This mid-to-late summer bloomer grows up to 36–38 inches tall, adding dramatic vertical interest in mixed borders. Its substantial panicles and medium-green foliage handle warm, humid conditions with poise. Pollinators flock to its nectar-rich blooms, which maintain a fresh appearance late into the season.
This North American native features a pleasing fragrance that enhances patios and walkways. Tall stems and abundant blooms make it suitable for cut flower arrangements, bringing its subtle scent indoors. Impressive mildew resistance allows the leaves to remain attractive in varying climates. Use it for mass plantings, as a striking specimen, or interspersed among shorter perennials for depth.
Garden Girls® Material Girl Phlox Care
Plant in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Aim for full sun exposure of at least six hours daily to encourage prolific flower production, though it also grows in partial shade. Water consistently to sustain moderate soil moisture, but avoid soggy conditions. Light fertilizing every other month stimulates steady growth and repeated blooming cycles.
Prune away spent flower clusters to spur fresh bud development and limit unwanted reseeding. Cutting the stems back to a few inches above ground level in late winter keeps beds neat and prepares the plant for robust spring growth. A protective mulch layer around the base helps shield roots from harsh winter temperatures. For container gardens, choose a pot with proper drainage and water deeply once the top inch of soil feels dry.
Garden Girls® Material Girl Phlox Spacing
Allow roughly 26 to 30 inches between each plant in mass plantings or borders to accommodate the tall stems. In container plantings, select a pot at least 12 to 14 inches wide to give roots adequate room to spread.
