Gatsby Glow Ball™ Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia 'NCHQ1') offers large, crisp white flower clusters that age gracefully to pale green from early to late summer. This compact shrub reaches around 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, creating a neat mounded shape that fits perfectly in smaller landscapes or containers. Each conical bloom appears above bold, lobed leaves that transform into deep reds and purples in autumn, stretching the season of interest. We love its subtle shift in color, combined with a tidy habit that remains appealing year-round.

Gatsby Glow Ball™ has sturdy oakleaf foliage and dwarf growth, which bring structure to beds or woodland borders. The flowers are beloved by local pollinators. This North American native shrub tolerates heat and adapts well to most well-draining soils. You can showcase it as a container accent on patios or position it near foundations and walkways for an elegant focal point. It also pairs nicely in mass plantings or as a backdrop for shorter perennials in partly shaded gardens.

Gatsby Glow Ball™ Oakleaf Hydrangea Care

Select a site with morning sun and afternoon shade or dappled light, planting in moist yet well-draining soil. Incorporate organic matter at planting time, aiming for a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Water thoroughly during hot periods, keeping the root zone evenly hydrated. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring supports healthy leaf growth and steady bud formation.

Clip off only spent flowers or damaged branches immediately after the blooming period, since this variety produces buds on old wood. In regions with cold winters, add a layer of mulch to shield roots from temperature extremes. Container-grown plants need a high-quality potting mix and consistent watering, particularly during scorching weather. If your shrub is overwintering outside in a pot, place it in a sheltered area to reduce stress from wind.

Gatsby Glow Ball™ Oakleaf Hydrangea Spacing

Arrange shrubs 3 to 4 feet apart when forming a row or cluster, allowing them enough room for mature growth and air circulation. If you’re aiming for a denser, hedge-like planting, space them slightly closer but anticipate periodic thinning. Choose a container at least 16 inches in diameter to accommodate root expansion and reduce frequent watering.
