It's big and bold and is bred to resist most diseases that affect peppers. Gold Standard Bell Pepper really does set the standard for fruit size, production and flavor. The peppers are ripe and ready to pick before or by 80 days from planting, turning from green to gold as they ripen. Plant at least two Gold Standards so you can harvest early from one plant and let the fruit on the other plant ripen to full sweetness.

Bell peppers are at the bottom of the pepper heat scale. They're just as crunchy, but thick-skinned and sweet. Gold Standard Pepper is bred for high pepper yield. It also is bred to resist bacterial leaf spot, tobacco mosaic virus and potato virus Y.

Gold Standard Pepper Plant Care

Bell pepper plants like heat, just like hot peppers. Wait to plant Gold Standard until any danger of frost has passed and when the soil is warm; this usually means at least 60-degree evenings. You can use black plastic mulch for about a week to warm the ground or container mix before planting. Space Gold Standard Pepper plants about 2 feet from one another or other vegetables to ensure they have room to grow and "breathe."

Growing Gold Standard Peppers

Your Gold Standard pepper should grow to about 30 inches high and around and filled with big bell peppers in summer. Since Gold Standard fruit is so large, you might need to stake the plant carefully as it starts producing fruit. Use a loose rubber band or similar household object to tie the plant gently to the stake. Don't use wire. The pepper needs at least 6 hours of sun a day, so it doesn't grow well indoors.

Be sure to choose a container large enough to support this plant, at least 24 inches wide at the mouth and nearly as deep. Fill it with good-quality potting mix and add a little compost if you like for additional nutrients. Water containers regularly, but slowly.

Watering Gold Standard Pepper Plants

Gold Standard pepper is a thirsty plant that needs consistent but moderate water to thrive. Give the plant a heavy soaking right after planting. Slow dripping water is best to keep the roots from sitting in soggy soil.

Feeding Gold Standard Pepper Plants

Gold Standard doesn't need much help to produce its large, delicious peppers. You can fertilize it once a month with a balanced fruit and vegetable fertilizer or compost tea.
