Golden Lights Azalea (Rhododendron ‘Golden Lights’) produces a splendid display of golden-yellow blooms that light up the garden in late spring. The funnel-shaped flowers appear in trusses of up to 12, contrasted by lush green leaves that often reveal a bronze-red hue in fall. This deciduous shrub grows up to six feet tall and four feet wide and develops a round, well-balanced form. Notably hardy, it withstands temperatures as low as -30°F, making it an excellent choice for gardeners in cooler zones. The eye-catching color and robust performance set this azalea apart as a spring showstopper.

Golden Lights Azalea proves dependable with good mildew resistance and an ability to attract pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds. Developed by the University of Minnesota, it tolerates filtered sunlight or dappled shade and is ideal for foundation plantings, woodland edges, container gardens, and hedges. Its fibrous roots benefit from mulching and regular watering, keeping care simple and maintenance low. Whether used as a standout specimen or grouped in masses, it imparts bright warmth and reliability to landscape designs.

Golden Lights Azalea Care

Plant in acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, placing the root ball shallowly since the plant’s fibrous roots sit close to the surface. Filtered sunlight or morning sun with afternoon shade is recommended in warm climates, while cooler regions can provide more direct sun. Water consistently, especially during active growth and blooming, but avoid soggy conditions by ensuring proper drainage. A specialized azalea or rhododendron fertilizer applied in spring can boost healthy growth and flowers. Adding mulch around the base helps retain moisture, protect roots in harsh weather, and maintain cooler soil temperatures.

Pruning can be done right after flowering, removing spent blooms to encourage fresh growth. Light trimming also helps maintain a compact shape if desired. Remove any damaged or diseased branches to keep the plant vigorous. In regions with harsh winters, consider an extra layer of mulch around the root zone to safeguard against extreme cold.

Golden Lights Azalea Spacing

Allow three to four feet between shrubs for a continuous hedge or mass planting, accounting for the mature width of about four feet. If spacing individual specimens for a more open look, maintain five to six feet between plants. When growing in containers, select a pot at least 16 inches across and ensure good drainage to accommodate the shallow but spreading root system. Adjust spacing or container size as plants grow to preserve an attractive display.
