Growing Zones
The Golden Penny Hydrangea is named for its striking yellow-green foliage that shines all summer long. While the leaves are lovely, this Hydrangea macrophylla has a lot to offer a landscape. This mophead Hydrangea features tiny flowers that bloom in large clusters during the summer. The flowers are blue in acidic soils and pink in alkaline soils. Broad leaves narrow to a point and boast lightly serrated edges.
The Golden Penny Hydrangea has an upright growth habit and a well-branched structure. This deciduous shrub makes a charming foundation planting or flowering hedge. Include it in a mixed bed, or add color to a sunny spot in a yard. Trim the flowers for use in an arrangement or dry them so you can continue to enjoy the globe-like blooms. The mophead flowers attract butterflies, making this plant an excellent addition to a butterfly garden. Grow the Golden Penny Hydrangea in zones 5 through 9.
Golden Penny Hydrangea Care
Plant the Golden Penny Hydrangea in a spot with full to partial sun. This shrub needs rich soil that is moist and well drained. The soil’s pH dictates the flower color, so test the soil and amend as necessary to adjust the flower color. Deeply water new plants for the first year. Established plants need one inch of water per week during the growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring.
Prune this hydrangea after the flowers fade. This big leaf hydrangea sets flower buds in late summer or early fall, so avoid pruning after late summer to ensure abundant blooms next year. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch in the fall to protect the roots from cold winter temperatures. Shrubs in windy areas will benefit from being wrapped in landscape fabric.
Golden Penny Hydrangea Spacing
The Golden Penny Hydrangea is a medium-sized shrub and reaches 5 to 6 feet tall and wide. Space shrubs 3 to 4 feet apart to create a continuous hedge.
