Growing Zones
Year-round color and minimal care ensure the Goshiki False Holly is a favorite. Variegated foliage has a prickly, pointed shape characteristic of hollies. The leaves are reddish-bronze to start and later settle into a creamy white with hints of green and gold. Osmanthus heterophyllus is a dense grower that is very full. Tiny flowers bloom in late summer.
This branched, upright perennial has a natural pyramid shape. As an evergreen with a large stature, this plant is a natural choice for creating a hedge or privacy screen. Define a property line or create a secluded patio or deck with a continuous row of these shrubs. Goshiki False Holly grows as a perennial in USDA zones 6 through 8.
Goshiki False Holly Care
This shrub grows well in fertile soil that is moist and well-drained. Plant in full to partial sun, but select an area with afternoon shade when grown in warm climates. Give this plant water when the top few inches of soil are dry. This plant is drought-tolerant, but water during a dry spell to reduce stress and support new growth.
Feed this plant using a balanced fertilizer each spring. Pruning is not generally required as this shrub maintains a nice shape naturally. Remove damaged growth as needed.
Goshiki False Holly Spacing
This festive, upright plant will reach 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide. Shrubs can be spaced 5 to 7 feet apart.
