Perfectly poised and always polished, Green Gem Boxwood Topiary features a clean cone form with small evergreen leaves packed tightly along the frame. Buxus microphylla var. koreana 'Green Gem' is slow growing, compact, and easy to place where height is needed without a wide shrub mass. Its dark green foliage keeps patios, walkways, and entry planters looking dressed even in the quiet months. We find the cone shape especially useful beside steps because it adds height without blocking the door or crowding the path.
This boxwood selection is valued for cold hardiness, dense branching, and better winter color than many older boxwoods. The spring flowers are tiny and cream-colored, so the clipped outline and foliage are the reason to grow it. Deer and rabbits usually avoid boxwood, and established plants can handle drier spells when the soil drains well. Use Green Gem Boxwood Topiary in pairs, in formal containers, along a short walk, or as a small evergreen accent in mixed foundation beds.
Green Gem Boxwood Topiary Care
Plant Green Gem Boxwood Topiary in full sun to partial shade, with afternoon shade helpful in hotter zones. It grows in loam, sandy soil, or amended clay as long as drainage is good. A slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soil pH, about 6.5 to 7.5, is best for steady foliage color and root health.
Water deeply after planting, then keep the root ball lightly moist while the plant settles in. Once established, water during dry weather when the top few inches of soil are dry or new stem tips begin to bend. Containers need closer attention because potting mix dries faster, especially in wind or summer sun. Feed in spring with a slow-release shrub fertilizer, and avoid late-season fertilizer that can encourage tender growth before winter.
Prune after the spring flush of new growth, clipping lightly to keep the cone even from top to base. A second light trim in early fall can sharpen the outline, but stop pruning about two months before the first expected frost. In cold climates, move potted topiary against a protected wall or into an unheated sheltered space during severe winter weather.
Green Gem Boxwood Topiary Spacing
Place single Green Gem Boxwood Topiary plants where the cone can be seen from several angles, or space pairs 3 to 4 feet apart for entryways and walkways. Use a container at least 16 inches wide for a young topiary, with drainage holes and a quality potting mix. Rotate patio containers every few weeks so all sides receive balanced light.
For container planting, pair Green Gem Boxwood Topiary with lobelia, fan flower, or wishbone flowers, which stay lower and let the cone remain the focal point. In garden beds, use Japanese forest grass for texture, lenten hellebores for part-shade interest, or spirea for seasonal color in nearby sunny areas. These companions match the tidy scale of the topiary while offering contrast in leaf shape, bloom season, or mounded habit.
