Growing Zones
Adored by pollinators, when planted in your garden the Hairy Mountain Mint will have them coming in droves. Botanically known as, Pycnanthemum verticillatum var. pilosum, this perennial grows to around three tall and is covered in small pale purple to white flowers in summer. The long, narrow and hairy green leaves of the Hairy Mountain Mint aptly smell of mint when brushed.
An American native perennial plant, Hairy Mountain Mint is easy to grow and care for. It can cope with dry soils and tends to be ignored by deer. Perfect for adding to an herbaceous border, you can also grow Hairy Mountain Mint for ground cover. It is often included in wildlife-friendly planting schemes.
Hairy Mountain Mint Care
You can grow this Hairy Mountain Mint either in full sun or partial shade. It is not fussy about soil type but prefers a free-draining substrate and is suitable for growing in zones 4 to 8. Water well on planting and until established, after which it can cope with dry spells. No fertilizer is required.
As the foliage dies back in the fall, cut it back to near ground level. As a rhizomatous perennial, you can limit its spread by pruning the roots in spring.
Hairy Mountain Mint Spacing
The Hairy Mountain Mint forms clumps around 1 to 3 feet tall and wide. If planting en masse, you can space each plant around 2 to 3 feet apart.
