Alcea rosea is the most common hollyhock to be found in gardens all over the country. Native to Asia, they grow in Zones 3-8. Traditionally understood to be biennials, hollyhocks Halo Series - Cerise is a perennial, flowering the first year and returning each year. Growing in all but the hottest southern portions of the United States, this lovely hollyhock is cold winter tolerant and lightly drought tolerant, making it a perfect choice for Northern, Midwest and MidSouth gardens and westward, and including the East Coast of the United States. Halo Series Cerise Hollyhock Care

Hollyhocks prefer full sun, at least 6 hours a day, and moist well-draining soil. Plant your hollyhock where it will receive the proper amount of sun and will have good air circulation to help in prevention of hollyhock rust, a common disease that plagues hollyhocks. Clean up all debris and remove all damaged or diseased leaves immediately. When first planted, add a slow release fertilizer to the soil, or amend the soil with good quality well composted organic material. Water frequently during dry periods. They prefer a soil pH of 5.8 to 6.2 for best performance.

Deadheading is not necessary as the spent blooms will drop off. You will probably find yourself pulling off spent blooms anyway, and it will not harm the plant to do so. After the bloom season has ended in the fall, cut the plant down to a couple inches from the ground. In harsh winter areas, mulch with a good quality pine mulch to protect the root zone. These lovely perennials are especially effective when planted in great quantities and wildlife really appreciate them. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds will especially appreciate you for giving them these flowers to feed off of.

Space your hollyhocks about 18 to 24 inches apart to aid in good air circulation. These tall beauties can reach up to 72 inches and grow to 24 inches wide. As beautiful as these are in an informal cottage garden or massed out in your landscape, they are equally beautiful as cut flowers, so plant enough to allow you to bring some of that beauty into your home.
