Fairy Washboard is a compact member of the Aloe family and is a great beginner plant for novice gardeners. The textured leaves form a symmetric rosette as it grows. Haworthia limifolia is the scientific name, and it refers to the file-like edge of the leaves. The bold texture and markings are prized in this succulent plant.

Best Locations For Growing Fairy Washboard

The compact size of this succulent makes it perfect for displaying on a window sill or with other plants on a shelf. This succulent is hardy to zone 9 and makes a great tabletop plant for the patio or deck during the summer in all of the growing zones. No parts of Fairy Washboard are toxic, so the plants might work in a brightly lit child's room, although care should be taken around the sharp edges and pointy ends of the leaves.

Fairy Washboard Sunlight Requirements

Since this succulent is a native of South Africa and Madagascar, it thrives in hot climates that are very bright. Indoors, place Fairy Washboard in a south-facing window to get as much direct sunlight as possible. The plant can be moved to a lower light spot if necessary, but the size of the leaves may decline.

Fairy Washboard Care

Repotting is not needed often since this succulent has a relatively shallow root system. Fairy Washboard regularly develops offset plants, or pups, which can be planted into their own pots at any time. Separating the mother from the pups is quickly done by breaking off the new plant and leaving it to dry for a day or two before potting. Use succulent and cactus potting soil that has a good amount of sand and perlite added.

Watering Fairy Washboard

Water this plant once every 7-10 days during the fall and winter when it is actively growing. Haworthia will slow its growth during the hottest part of the summer and can be left to dry out thoroughly between waterings. If the leaves begin to look brown and shriveled up, the plant is dehydrated. The plant is easily revived with a good soaking in a tray of water for 30-40 minutes to allow the soil to rehydrate fully. Prune off any damaged or dead leaves to clean up the plant and keep pests away. Supplemental humidity is not usually needed, but in arid climates, a misting with distilled water every 2-3 days will help maintain strong growth.

Feeding Fairy Washboard

Fairy Washboard flowers regularly from fall to spring. Adding a diluted liquid succulent fertilizer to the watering once a month will support longer bloom times. Fertilizing in the summer is not needed, while the plant is semi-dormant.

Plant Addicts Warranty - 1 Year (Extra Purchase Required)

We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. Hungry animals, drought, poor soil conditions, over watering, diseases & pests are all good examples of what can cause plants to die. The Plant Addicts Warranty is a 1 year warranty protecting you from all of the unknowns and will replace your plant if something were to happen to it.

The warranty is purchased on a per plant basis and must be purchased at the same time as the plant(s). We will cover 100% of the price of the plant, but the warranty does not cover shipping costs. SImply let us know if your plant has died within 1 year of receiving it and we will get you a new one shipped out as soon as possible (depending on the time of the year and availability). We may ask for photos for documentation purposes, but we try to make the process as easy as possible.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
