- Perfect For Hot Summer Months
- 8-12 Inches Tall
- 8-12 Inches Wide
- Plant in Full Sun
When other lettuces are fading or bolting in summer heat, Heatwave Blend steps in. The lettuce mix is blended especially to extend your lettuce-growing and harvesting season. The colorful blend includes purple-red, crispy, lettuce, romaine, looseleaf and other lettuce types to give you variety for salads and sandwiches into summer. The lettuce is mature in less than 50 days and you can continue to harvest for weeks, since many of the green regrow. This pretty lettuce mix grows to about 8 to 12 inches high.
With pretty red and green leaves and a variety of leaf textures and edges, Heatwave Blend is more than just an edible plant for your kitchen. It's pretty enough to show off in a container or the front of a garden bed.
Heatwave Blend Lettuce Care
Most lettuces do fine in spring, preferring cooler temperatures. Heatwave Blend can be planted a little later, into late spring and early summer in most regions. Give the lettuce at least 6 hours of sun a day, and a little extra afternoon shade in hot zones or as summer heats up. Plant it again in late summer for fall harvest. At about 8 to 12 inches wide, it's best to space Heatwave Blend plantings about 10 to 12 inches apart. Add a layer of mulch to help retain moisture.
Growing Heatwave Blend Lettuce
Lettuce is easy to grow and matures faster than many edibles. Depending on the size of your leaves when you plant Heatwave Blend Lettuce, you might be able to harvest in as little as 2 weeks from planting. Leave about 2 inches at the bottom of all harvested leaves to allow them to regrow. You also can grow this Heatwave Blend indoors. Give the leaves plenty of light from a fluorescent or grow light setup.
Lettuce is so pretty and lush that you can grow it nearly anywhere in the landscape, even in a bed full of flowers. Or feature this lettuce mix in an attractive container. Any container will do, but glazed and wider pots hold more lettuce and water. Don't be afraid to place the container in a featured spot on your patio or in the entryway if it will get enough sun. Use a fresh, high-quality potting mix to provide plenty of nutrients to the plant.
Watering Heatwave Blend Lettuce
Water Heatwave Blend Lettuce regularly. The greens will taste better with consistent moisture. And even though this lettuce can take more heat than most, give it some extra water during hot, dry periods.
Feeding Heatwave Blend Lettuce
Good soil nutrition helps the leaves grow and taste better. Use a water-soluble balanced fertilizer every two weeks when watering Heatwave Blend in a container, raised bed or vegetable garden. Compost tea or other organic nutrients are the best choices for these edibles.
