Blue Maid Holly (Ilex x meserveae 'Blue Maid') brings classic holiday charm with its glossy, deep blue-green foliage and abundant bright red berries appearing in fall and lasting through winter. This vigorous evergreen shrub reaches 15 feet in height, quickly forming a dense, attractive privacy hedge or striking landscape accent. Its spiny-free leaves and purple-tinted stems distinguish it from other hollies, providing safe and snag-free planting along walkways or borders. To maximize berry production, pair Blue Maid with a male pollinator like Blue Prince.
Choosing live Blue Maid Holly over artificial decorations enhances your holiday season with authentic natural beauty and the joy of sustainability. As a thoughtful holiday gift, this living shrub creates lasting memories, allowing the recipient to plant and enjoy it year-round. After its indoor display, planting Blue Maid outdoors contributes positively to your garden's ecosystem, inviting local birds to enjoy the berries during winter.
Holiday Blue Maid Holly Care
Indoors during winter, provide Blue Maid Holly with bright, indirect sunlight, maintaining room temperatures between 60-70°F. For optimal humidity, occasionally mist the leaves or set the pot near a humidity tray filled with water. Water regularly, keeping the soil slightly moist but allowing the top inch to dry between waterings to prevent root rot.
In spring, transition Blue Maid Holly outdoors gradually over one week. Choose a planting site in partial to full sun with well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, place the plant level with the soil surface, fill in, and water thoroughly to settle. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and provide protection through colder months.
