North Pole® Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Art Boe') offers a strikingly narrow, upright form that stays densely green throughout the coldest months. It typically grows 10 to 15 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, making it excellent for small gardens or as a living screen. With a naturally columnar habit, this arborvitae adds a bold vertical accent to any landscape. Because of its cold tolerance and minimal upkeep needs, it’s a standout choice for year-round interest.
Using a living conifer during the holiday season benefits both the environment and your décor. Unlike artificial ornaments, you can transplant this hardy shrub outdoors once winter subsides, cutting down on waste. Plus, there’s something special about having authentic greenery, complete with a gentle evergreen aroma and naturally lush foliage. It also offers a refreshing indoor presence when other seasonal plants have long since lost their appeal.
Holiday North Pole® Arborvitae Care
From January to early spring, keep your arborvitae in a bright spot where temperatures stay relatively cool. Water lightly when the top inch of soil feels dry, ensuring it isn’t sitting in excess moisture. Gently rotate its container every couple of weeks, and check for signs of dryness or browning in the foliage.
Once temperatures warm in the spring, gradually transition your arborvitae to outdoor conditions by placing it outside for a few hours each day over about a week. Then dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball in soil that drains well and receives enough sun. Position the root flare slightly above ground level, backfill gently, and water deeply. Once established, North Pole® needs little care beyond occasional watering in dry spells.
