Holiday Wildfire™ Winterberry dazzles with its dark green foliage and bright red berries that appear in autumn and persist into early winter. Botanically known as Ilex verticillata ‘Wildfire™, this deciduous holly matures to about 7 feet tall and wide. The large red fruit stays prominent after the leaves drop, offering a seasonal highlight that enhances both indoor décor and outdoor landscapes. Its adaptability to challenging soil conditions and cold climates sets it apart from other ornamental shrubs, making it a top choice for festive displays and year-round appeal.
A live Winterberry brings an earth-friendly alternative to synthetic decorations and can transition to an outdoor planting after the holiday season. It makes a meaningful gift that can brighten winter days and keep on growing long after the festivities are over. This shrub also supports wildlife outdoors, providing winter forage for birds once established.
Holiday Wildfire™ Winterberry Care
Place your Winterberry in a bright, moderately cool indoor spot, watering consistently so the soil remains lightly moist without becoming soggy. Keep it away from direct heat sources or drafts, and consider misting the foliage periodically to maintain a comfortable humidity level. This approach helps the shrub retain its health until it’s ready to move outside.
When temperatures begin to climb in spring, gradually transition your Winterberry to the outdoors by setting it out for short periods each day. Select a location with full sun to partial shade and slightly acidic, well-drained soil, then dig a hole wide enough for the root ball to spread comfortably. Position the shrub so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, backfill gently, and water thoroughly. For dependable berry production, plant a male pollinator (such as Jim Dandy Winterberry) within the recommended range, and enjoy the ongoing seasonal color this hardy holly offers.
