Hollywood Hibiscus™ Disco Diva™ Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'JBG MH-17') showcases dramatic orange and magenta blooms that stay visible from spring until the first chill. Its color spectrum continually captivates on patios or in garden beds. It reaches about 4 feet tall, creating a striking vertical display without crowding neighboring plants. Many gardeners appreciate its reliable flower production that brings an exotic flair to warm-weather landscapes.
Its upright growth habit pairs well with both sunny borders and container plantings, while the foliage remains attractive through the growing season. This tropical shrub is known to resist common garden pests when grown in proper conditions. Originally hailing from warmer regions, it can function as a year-round shrub in frost-free climates or a showy annual where winters are colder. Use it in mass plantings, accent plantings, and even small hedges, which benefit from its colorful impact.
Hollywood Hibiscus™ Disco Diva™ Tropical Hibiscus Care
Place it in full sun with rich, well-draining soil, incorporating compost if needed. Water regularly throughout the peak of summer, especially during dry spells, but avoid leaving the roots in standing water. A balanced fertilizer applied every two to four weeks supports strong bud formation, and a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is suitable. In northern regions, treat it as a patio plant and move containers indoors when nighttime temperatures dip below 50°F.
Clip off faded flowers and gently shape any overgrown branches to maintain a neat outline. Remove damaged or diseased stems whenever noticed, and thin out the interior if growth becomes tangled. In colder areas, overwinter it indoors with reduced watering and bright light, keeping an eye out for insects that can settle in. Container plants require well-draining potting mixes, and re-potting may be necessary every couple of years to accommodate root expansion.
Hollywood Hibiscus™ Disco Diva™ Tropical Hibiscus Spacing
Allow approximately 48 inches between plants if you’re planting in a mixed border. Closer intervals around 40 inches create a fuller hedge, though extra pruning could be required. For a single accent, use a container at least 18 inches across to house the root system.
