Hollywood Hibiscus™ VIP™ Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis ‘JBG 14002’) offers satiny golden petals brushed with orange, crowned by a magenta center that draws the eye in any sunny garden. We’ve grown it in a large container, watching it reach 4 to 5 feet tall and maintain a neat, upright shape. Its long-blooming display extends from late spring into fall, providing steady color when many other plants wind down. Its big satellite-dish blooms keep the landscape lively without extra fuss.
VIP™ Tropical Hibiscus stands up well to heat and resists occasional deer browsing. This semi-evergreen shrub, native to warmer zones, tolerates short bouts of dryness once roots establish. It can decorate mixed borders, serve as a cheerful hedge, or show off in pots on patios and balconies. Bright blooms lure hummingbirds, helping to turn any summer haven into a welcoming pollinator stop.
Hollywood Hibiscus™ VIP™ Tropical Hibiscus Care
Set it in a spot with abundant light—at least six hours of direct sun—and use well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Water consistently during hot spells, keeping the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. A balanced fertilizer every two to four weeks ensures robust bud production, and a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH supports healthy roots. In cooler regions, keep it as a container plant and move it indoors once evening temperatures hover around 50°F.
Trim faded flowers or leggy stems to maintain a tidy silhouette, and clip out damaged branches whenever you spot them. In cold-winter areas, pot-grown specimens benefit from a bright indoor location through the frost season, with reduced watering to prevent root rot. Re-potting may be necessary if roots outgrow the current container, especially if you notice frequent wilting. Regular checks for pests, along with maintaining proper light and watering, help keep this hibiscus lush all season.
Hollywood Hibiscus™ VIP™ Tropical Hibiscus Spacing
Space shrubs about 48 inches apart for mass plantings, rows, or hedges to allow branches adequate room. Single specimens in borders do well with similar spacing to ensure air circulation. A container measuring 14-16 inches wide accommodates new transplants, granting ample root space for growth.
