Growing Zones
The Honey Roasted False Indigo or Baptisia adds warm tones to a sunny garden. Tall flower spikes boast mahogany-red flowers with yellow keels – the flowers become more yellow as they age. The blooms hover above oval-shaped, blue-green foliage. The flowers become seed pods by the end of the bloom cycle. The seed pods add visual interest and are a food source for birds.
Baptisia is a native plant that is drought tolerant and low maintenance. This clump-forming perennial is bushy and can be grown in beds, borders, or containers. Pollinators enjoy the flowers, while deer leave the stems alone. Grow this plant as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Honey Roasted False Indigo Care
Honey Roasted False Indigo performs best in full to partial sun. It prefers average, well-drained soil. Water False Indigo consistently for the first growing season and reduce the frequency for established plants, watering only during a dry period. Feed the plants in the spring using a balanced fertilizer.
Trim the growth after the flowers fade to maintain a leafy, bushy look, although removing the flower stalks will prevent the plant from forming seed pods later in the season.
Honey Roasted False Indigo Spacing
Honey Roasted False Indigo is an upright, clump-forming plant. The flower spikes reach 36 to 40 inches tall and 40 to 48 inches wide. Space plants 36 inches apart to create a mass planting.
