Add a flourish of nostalgia to the landscape growing the Hyperion Daylily in your garden. This cultivar was introduced in 1925 but remains a standard variety today for good reason. It features a clear yellow, four-inch flower that has a pale lime throat. The lightly fragrant flowers of the Hyperion appear above the strappy foliage in mid-summer.

The slowly spreading nature of the daylily makes it an excellent option for a border plant in a perennial bed. Dense clumps crowd out weeds well. It is tough, adaptable, low-maintenance, and resistant to rabbits. Use it in an alternating pattern with small shrubs to break up a bed in an attractive manner.

Hyperion Daylily Care

Plant the daylily in partial or full sun so it receives at least four hours of bright sunlight daily. The ideal soil is well-drained but can be of varied quality and could be slightly wet to dry. The Hyperion is drought, heat, and humidity-tolerant but does benefit from occasional watering during extended dry spells. A layer of organic material mulch spread around the plant encourages vigor.

Remove spent flowers and seed pods to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage reblooming. Cut scapes back to the ground once all of the flowers on the scape have finished blooming. Trim off the foliage after it dies back in the fall.

Hyperion Daylily Spacing

The Hyperion Daylily reaches a height of just over three feet with a spread of up to two feet. Space plants eighteen inches to two feet apart. To create a solid edging faster, space plants just one foot apart. As with other daylilies, the Hyperion has a clumping, spreading habit.
