Incrediball Storm Proof™ Smooth Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens 'SMNHAGOV') bears huge, white globe-shaped blooms that stay upright in even the heaviest downpours. We've found its sturdy stems truly live up to the “storm proof” name. Its abundant flowers begin in mid-summer and remain eye-catching for weeks, whether you enjoy them fresh or as cut and dried arrangements. Its compact form, about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, fits neatly into smaller landscapes or containers.

Beyond its graceful blooms, Incrediball Storm Proof™ features a denser, rounder habit than many similar hydrangeas. This North American native is known for being pollinator-friendly, welcoming visiting bees and butterflies to its large, nectar-rich flower heads. Its upright nature also makes it suitable for mixed borders, foundation plantings, and massing in larger beds. Low-maintenance needs make it an ideal choice for busy gardeners seeking dependable summer color.

Incrediball Storm Proof™ Smooth Hydrangea Care

Place it where it can receive partial to full sun, though afternoon shade helps in hotter climates. Provide a rich, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, adding compost or other organic matter at planting time. Water thoroughly two or three times weekly while it establishes, particularly if it’s in a sunnier spot. A slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring supports healthy stems and steady blooms.

Trim it back by about one-third in late winter or early spring, cutting just above a strong set of buds. This keeps stems sturdy and removes any dead growth. In colder regions, apply mulch around the base for added root protection, and remove any leaf litter to discourage potential fungal issues. Potted specimens thrive in a good-quality potting mix, needing consistent watering and occasional pruning for shape.

Incrediball Storm Proof™ Smooth Hydrangea Spacing

Set individual plants 3 to 4 feet apart if you prefer a tidy border or small hedge. Give them slightly more room in larger mass plantings to accommodate mature width and easy access for pruning. A container at least 12 to 16 inches wide allows room for root growth and supports its naturally rounded silhouette.
