Ivory Queen Allium Bulbs offer sculptural spring texture before the flowers even open. Allium karataviense 'Ivory Queen' grows only about 6 to 12 inches tall, but its broad blue-gray leaves and ivory globe blooms give it a bold presence in small spaces. The rounded flower heads can reach 5 to 6 inches across, sitting just above the foliage like pale ornaments. Ivory Queen makes the biggest statement near stones, path edges, and low containers where the foliage can be appreciated up close.
This compact ornamental onion is native to Central Asia and is especially well suited to dry, sunny garden edges. It blooms in late spring to early summer, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators while deer usually leave it alone. The foliage naturally yellows as the bulb finishes flowering, then the plant slips into summer dormancy. Use it in rock gardens, front borders, trough planters, and small bulb groupings where taller alliums would be out of scale.
Ivory Queen Allium Bulbs Care
Plant Ivory Queen Allium Bulbs in full sun to partial shade, with full sun supporting the strongest flower stems. Well-drained soil is essential, especially sandy soil, gravelly soil, raised beds, or amended clay that does not hold winter water. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH, about 6.5 to 7.5, suits this Central Asian species well.
At fall planting, water to settle the soil around the bulbs and feed with bulb fertilizer placed below the root zone or top-dressed according to the label. In spring, water only when the soil becomes dry during active growth, then allow the area to dry as the leaves yellow. This allium prefers a dry summer rest, so avoid irrigation-heavy beds after bloom.
After flowering, leave the seed heads standing for dried structure or cut them for arrangements. Trim yellowing foliage only after it has finished feeding the bulb and pulls away easily. In containers, protect pots from repeated freeze-thaw cycles and excess winter moisture.
Ivory Queen Allium Bulbs Spacing
Plant Ivory Queen Allium Bulbs 4 to 6 inches deep and 6 to 8 inches apart, with the pointed end up and the root side down. For containers, use a pot at least 10 to 12 inches wide with drainage holes and a gritty, well-draining mix. Keep container soil lightly moist during spring growth, then much drier after the foliage fades.
For container companions, pair Ivory Queen Allium Bulbs with hens & chicks, sea thrift, or sedum, which share a preference for sun and sharp drainage. In garden beds, irises and avens suit the same spring timing while giving the planting contrasting leaf texture. Dianthus is another strong nearby partner because it stays low, tolerates well-drained soil, and continues color after the allium finishes.
