Jack's Camellia keeps its size manageable while delivering luminous pink color to bright shade. Camellia japonica 'Jack's's' produces formal double rose-pink flowers over glossy dark green evergreen foliage. Its compact upright habit reaches about 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, which makes it easier to place near patios, shaded entries, and smaller foundation beds. We use this one when a larger camellia would feel too bulky, especially near a seating area for close appreciation of the flower color.

This japonica camellia is known for a long bloom window, often carrying flowers from midwinter into spring as weather allows. The dense branching gives it value as a low flowering hedge, container specimen, or mass planting in part-shade beds. Its evergreen leaves provide structure after the flowers finish, and the pink blooms are useful for cutting or floating in a shallow bowl. Give it a sheltered location so winter wind and hot afternoon sun do not stress the foliage.

Jack's Camellia Care

Plant Jack's Camellia in partial shade, filtered sun, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It grows best in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains well. Keep soil acidic to mildly acidic, generally around 5.0 to 6.5 pH.

Water deeply after planting, then check the upper soil before watering again. During bud formation and bloom, keep moisture steady, but never let the root zone sit in standing water. Feed from late winter or early spring through midsummer with a slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving shrubs.

Prune after flowering, before summer bud set begins. Remove crossing branches, shorten uneven shoots, or thin lightly to keep air moving through the shrub. To increase individual flower size, some gardeners remove extra buds from each cluster, leaving one strong bud to develop.

Jack's Camellia Spacing

Space Jack's Camellia 3 to 4 feet apart for a compact hedge or mass planting, and 5 to 6 feet apart when using it as an individual specimen. Use a container at least 16 to 20 inches wide with drainage holes and an acidic, bark-based potting mix.

In shaded landscape beds, plant it with azaleas and rhododendron, astilbe, ferns, or dogwoods for layered height and compatible soil needs. For containers, begonias and wishbone flowers make good seasonal companions in filtered light with regular watering.
