Jade Frost Sea Holly, botanically named Eryngium planum ‘Jade Frost’, was one of the first variegated Sea Hollys on the market. Its unique color, shape, and form make it a striking addition to any garden. Jade Frost Sea Holly has thickly textured, blue-tinged, rosette-formed foliage with a cream-colored margin that may turn pink during cooler weather. Long-lasting, electric violet-blue flowers appear on spiny stems in summer and provide contrasting color and texture to the multicolored foliage.
This unique full-sun beauty is hardy, tough, and reliable. Grown in Hardiness Zones 5-8, this perennial reaches heights of 24 inches and widths from 12-24 inches. Jade Frost Sea Holly likes hot and dry conditions and develops more intense blue flowers during hotter temperatures. Jade Frost is tolerant of salt and is deer and rabbit resistant. The dried seed heads add interest to the garden and in flower arrangements, and may self-seed. The nectar- and pollen-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Jade Frost Sea Holly Plant Care
Jade Frost Sea Holly thrives in hot, full-sun areas in sandy free-draining soils. It will tolerate nutrient-deficient soils once established and is quite drought tolerant. Overall, this is an almost maintenance-free perennial.
Jade Frost Sea Holly does not like to be overwatered, and it spreads more quickly in light soil. You can leave the dried stems and seed heads on the plant for winter interest and cut back all foliage a few inches from the soil in the early spring to encourage new growth.
Jade Frost Sea Holly Plant Spacing
Perfect when grown in the front of a perennial border, in a rock garden, or container, and lovely as a fresh or dried cut flower in arrangements. Space Jade Frost Sea Holly a minimum of 18 inches between plants to allow for their full spread.
