Mature Height

Mature Spread
Jade Princess Ornamental Millet delivers a striking combination of chartreuse foliage crowned by rich brown flower spikes that appear from late spring through summer. These pollen-free plumes catch the eye in containers or garden beds, adding height and texture to your outdoor spaces. Each plant reaches around 24 to 30 inches tall, forming a controlled, bushy habit with dense leaves reminiscent of corn. Its bold color shift and feathery bottlebrush spikes make it a unique grass to cultivate.
This annual variety descends from African millet species, celebrated for its heat tolerance and easy upkeep. Deer typically ignore its coarse foliage, while pollinators often find the seedheads appealing. You can utilize it in mass plantings for a dramatic backdrop, cluster several in sunny borders to provide contrast against softer plants, or position one as a focal point in a container. Its upright stance pairs well with bright flowers such as zinnias, salvia, or petunias, bringing a tropical flair to even smaller landscapes.
Jade Princess Ornamental Millet Care
Plant in well-draining, moderately fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, and avoid cool temperatures below 60°F. Provide full sun for strong, upright stems and richly colored leaves, watering consistently while letting the surface dry in between. A mild, balanced fertilizer once a month supports lush growth and healthy plumes. If you wish to encourage additional leaf or spike development, remove spent or browning foliage.
Maintain your millet by cutting away any tattered blades during the growing season. Container-grown specimens should be watered more frequently, but avoid soggy conditions. In cold regions, discard or compost plants once frost arrives, since this tropical grass will not overwinter. For potted plants, store them indoors where temperatures remain above freezing during the winter, though many gardeners simply treat this as a summer annual.
Jade Princess Ornamental Millet Spacing
Place individual plants 24 inches apart in rows or groupings, granting each clump space to grow without overcrowding. If you plan to feature one as a container thriller, choose a pot about 16 inches wide, allowing the roots enough room to grow among other companions.
