The Japanese Loquat Tree (Eriobotrya japonica) is one of the few fruit trees that flowers in fall and ripens fruit in spring, so you’re harvesting when most backyards are still waiting on summer. It matures around 15–20 feet tall and 12–15 feet wide, with big, glossy evergreen leaves that keep the tree looking full even in the off-season. The fruit tastes like a sweet apricot-plum mix and is especially good for fresh eating or quick batches of jam because it doesn’t need much added pectin. We suggest planting Japanese Loquat where you’ll notice the winter flower fragrance on mild days, like near a walk or patio.  

Japanese Loquat Tree Care

Plant Japanese Loquat Tree in spring once the risk of hard freeze has passed, or in fall in warm-winter areas, setting it at the same depth as the nursery pot. Space it about 12–15 feet from other trees. Give it full sun to part shade in well-drained soil, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Prune after fruiting to shape and remove damaged wood, and in colder zones wait to prune until you can see what has leafed back out after winter.

Growing Japanese Loquat Tree

Fruit typically ripens about 4–5 months after flowering, landing in spring to early summer depending on your climate and winter temperatures. Outdoors, loquats are most reliable for fruiting in warmer zones because flowers and young fruit can be damaged by freezes even if the tree itself survives cold snaps. Give it room for its mature size, and keep consistent moisture during bloom-to-fruit set for better cluster fill.

Growing Japanese Loquat Tree in Containers

Use a 20–30 gallon pot to start, stepping up as the root ball fills the container. Choose a fast-draining mix plus a container with multiple drainage holes. Repot every 1–2 years while it’s young and every 2–3 years as it settles in, refreshing soil and lightly teasing circling roots. In a container, it works as a thriller with a wide, evergreen canopy, and you can move it to shelter during cold events to protect flowers. Include oregano and pansies around the base to add color to a container planting. Good landscape companions include gardenia and jasmine for a layered, sweet fragrance in the evening.

Watering Japanese Loquat Tree

Water 1–2 times per week during the first growing season, and switch to deep watering during dry stretches once established. If leaves curl, scorch at the edges, or clusters drop early, it usually needs more consistent moisture and a mulch ring to cool the root zone.

Feeding Japanese Loquat Tree

Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer, and avoid heavy nitrogen that can trigger tender growth that’s more prone to problems like fire blight. For container trees, a lighter dose a few times during active growth keeps fruiting steady without forcing lanky shoots.
