Lacette Fragrant Sumac captures attention with finely textured foliage, warm yellow spring blooms, and bright red berries that persist through winter. The glossy leaves release a subtle, fresh aroma when touched and transition to deep russet in autumn. Growing about 3 to 4.5 feet tall with a spread of 6 to 7 feet, this shrub forms a dense, mounded silhouette perfect for adding structure. Its ornamental appeal and support of native pollinators set it apart from common landscape varieties.

Lacette Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica ‘Fine Textured Compact Select A’ PP28669) stands out for its tolerance to varied soils and ability to thrive in full sun. Originally derived from a North American species, it handles drought once established and shrugs off deer browsing. The naturally aromatic leaves reduce issues from pests, making it a low-maintenance asset for gardeners. Consider placing it on slopes for erosion control or grouping several plants to form a wildlife-friendly hedge.

Lacette Fragrant Sumac Care

Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil, mixing in compost if the ground is heavy or clay-based. Water regularly through the first growing season, but allow the topsoil to dry slightly between sessions. A light, all-purpose fertilizer in early spring often suffices, especially if soil is already moderately fertile. Soil pH can range from mildly acidic to slightly alkaline, though gently acidic conditions are preferred. Once established, this shrub tolerates short dry spells and handles a variety of temperatures in Zones 3 through 8.

In most cases, extensive pruning is not required. Light trimming right after the spring bloom keeps the shape neat and encourages fresh branch development. Thinning older or damaged stems may help maintain airflow and highlight the shrub’s mounded habit. If planting in containers, consider occasional pinching to restrict growth for smaller gardens.

Lacette Fragrant Sumac Spacing

For a hedge or mass planting, space each plant about 6 feet apart to allow room for its mature spread. In more casual borders, you might opt for slightly looser spacing to showcase each shrub's form. Containers of at least 16 inches in diameter are recommended if using this sumac as a patio accent, leaving room for root expansion over several seasons.
