Growing Zones
Large, magnificent flowers with rows and rows of tissue-paper-thin petals in a lovely shade of red make the Lady in Red peony a standout plant to feature in a mixed bed or border. Flowers bloom in late spring, and the elliptical, dark green foliage continues to provide color and interest through the first frost. Also known as Paeonia lactifolia, this plant is an herbaceous perennial.
This plant can easily be a focal point in a mixed border, perennial bed, or foundation planting. The blooms make wonderful and long-lasting cut flowers. Established plants require little care but continue to look amazing year after year. This shrub is deer and rabbit resistant, making it a good option for areas prone to animal damage. Grow the Lady in Red peony in zones 4 through 8.
Lady in Red Peony Care
Full sun is best for the Lady in Red Peony. Plant in moist but well-drained soil and water during a dry period. Fertilize in the spring using a balanced plant food. This cultivar has strong stems, so staking is not always necessary but can help hold the branches upright when the large and heavy flowers bloom.
Trim dead or broken growth as necessary during the growing season. Leave the foliage in place after the flowers fade so the roots can store energy for the next growing season. Cut the stems back to a couple of inches high after the first heavy frost.
Lady in Red Peony Spacing
The Lady in Red peony reaches 28 to 32 inches tall and 20 to 22 inches wide. Peonies are susceptible to powdery mildew and fungal diseases, so space shrubs 22 inches apart so air can flow around the foliage.
