Feature

Lakemont is a late-season seedless grape that is as good to eat as it is for wine making. The self-pollinating vines produce copious amounts of large fruit similar to the Thompson seedless variety. Lakemont will begin producing fruit in August after the plant matures to 2-3 years old. Gardeners in USDA zones 5-9 can grow this vigorous vine to cover arbors and pergolas, or train it over the wall of an unsightly shed or other outside building. The deciduous leaves have a fantastic golden color in the fall just before leaf drop.

Lakemont Seedless Grapes Care

Plant grape vines early in the spring when the soil can be worked easily. Choose a location with at least 6-8 hours of direct sun and well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Dig a planting hole as deep as the pot and 2-3 times wider to allow the root system to spread comfortably. Grape vines need to be spaced farther apart than shrubs and perennials. Space multiple vines 6-8 feet apart from the center of each plant. Prune the vines well after planting and tie new growth to the support of your choice to guide the vines.

Growing Lakemont Seedless Grapes

The maximum height for Lakemont seedless grape vines is 3-5 feet with a spread of 2-3 feet, making them more compact and easier to incorporate into an existing edible garden design. Fruiting generally begins after 2-3 years of growth. Although this is a self-pollinating variety, growing similar seedless grape varieties nearby will increase the yields of fruit.

The large root system of Lakemont makes it less suitable for growing in a pot for a long period of time. As an alternative, it can be grown in a raised bed if the native ground soil is poor. Incorporate organic compost to help break up heavy soil and improve drainage over time.

Watering Lakemont Seedless Grapes

Watering grapes is not generally necessary after they are well established in the garden. Provide one inch of water every week to 10 days in the first growing season. Watering with drip irrigation or soaker hoses is ideal for grapes to keep their foliage dry and less susceptible to mildew and fungal diseases. Gardeners in dry summer climates may need to water once every 10-14 days after the grape vines are established if there is no natural precipitation. Overwatering grape vines is more harmful than letting the soil dry fully between sessions.

Feeding Lakemont Seedless Grapes

Fertilize grapes 2-3 times during the growing season. Use a granular fertilizer that is rich in micronutrients and low in nitrogen to encourage large fruits. Apply the feed early in the spring when the foliage begins to grow, again after flowering, and possibly when the fruit begins to swell. Seasonal mulching with organic compost will dramatically reduce the need for supplemental fertilizers in an edible garden. The use of organic formulations endorsed with the OMRI designation is recommended.
