Growing Zones
Lapins Cherry Tree produces dark, juicy fruit without needing a second tree to get started. It matures at about 15–20 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide with a rounded canopy. A spring show of white blossoms mature to deep red, dessert-sweet cherries, ripening in early summer. The fruit is perfect for fresh bowls, baking, and canning. The clean green foliage shifts into yellow, orange, and red tones as fall cools down. Prunus avium ‘Lapins’ is a solid choice when you want sweet-cherry flavor but don’t have room to dedicate space to multiple pollinizers.
Lapins Cherry Care
Plant in early spring or fall in full sun and well-drained soil, with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Space trees about 12–15 feet apart so the canopy can fill in without crowding. Prune in winter to build a strong structure with well-spaced branches, and remove weak, drooping, or crossing growth to keep light moving through the tree.
Growing Lapins Cherry
Lapins typically begins bearing in about 3–5 years, with harvest landing in early summer once the fruit turns fully dark and tastes sweet, not just red. Give it room to grow and plan on netting as fruit colors, because birds will notice your crop before you do. If you add another sweet cherry nearby, you can improve fruit set, but one tree can still produce on its own.
Growing Lapins Cherry in Containers
Grow young Lapins Cherry in a 20–25 gallon pot with excellent drainage and a bright, all-day sun location. Repot every 2–3 years so the tree stays productive and doesn’t stall out in a tight root zone. Suitable container companions include alyssum, pansies, and lettuce plants, which keep the surface shaded without competing heavily for water.
Watering Lapins Cherry
Water deeply during the first season. Once established, switch to soaking when the top few inches of soil dry, especially during hot stretches and while fruit is sizing. Curling or drooping leaves on warm days can mean it’s thirsty.
Feeding Lapins Cherry
Feed in early spring with a balanced fruit-tree fertilizer, and apply a lighter follow-up in early summer if growth is pale or sparse. Avoid heavy nitrogen after mid-summer so new growth can harden before cold weather and maximize flowering next spring.
