Want a compact full sun perennial that will really pack a punch? Give Li’l Bang Daybreak Tickseed Coreopsis a try this spring. Bright yellow flowers with dark crimson/orange rings and a yellow center will really knock your socks off with its intense color and vigorous blooms. Coreopsis in general has a great reputation in gardens everywhere, and now you can have them in your small garden settings. This prolific beauty is great for pollinator gardens as bees and butterflies cannot leave it alone.

Native to meadows and prairies across North, Central and South America Zones 5 -9, Coreopsis has gained the reputation as one of the easiest perennials for gardeners to grow. This improved hybrid is even easier as it does not self sow, thereby putting its energies into producing flowers, and loads of them. More compact than the Big Bang series of Coreopsis, this perennial will fit in just about any size garden and hold its own. Another great attribute is this lovely flower grows well in clay soil, tackling some of the tougher growing conditions you can throw at it.

Li'l Bang Daybreak Tickseed Care

Plant Coreopsis in full sun for best flowering. It thrives in poor, well draining soil, even rocky soils won’t stop it. The only caveat for growing Coreopsis is that it will not tolerate wet soggy soil. Do not fertilize as that can create weak stems and too much growth, weakening the whole plant. Water only when extremely dry for extended periods. Tickseed Coreopsis tolerates a wide variety of acidic and neutral soil pH, so nothing to concern most gardeners here. Like most native wildflowers, Coreopsis seems to thrive on neglect.

Deadheading will help to prolong the bloom season. If you do not want to deadhead, you will get a shorter bloom period, but you still get plenty of flowers. Do not cut stems back for the winter. Instead, wait until just before the plant breaks dormancy in late winter/early spring and then cut stems down to about 3 inches above the ground. Mulching is not needed for winter protection.

Space your plants about 12 to 18 inches apart. This compact grower will reach about 12 inches tall and spread out to 18 inches wide at maturity, so spacing is important. This improved hybrid was bred to resist plant diseases and is naturally resistant to deer and rabbit browsing.
