Lisbon Lemon Tree is a dependable choice for tart, juicy lemons on a vigorous, handsome tree. This well-branched citrus tree also offers fragrant white flowers and glossy evergreen foliage. It typically matures 8 to 15 feet tall and 8 to 15 feet wide, or smaller with pruning in a patio container. Compared with many other lemons, Lisbon is known for stronger tolerance to heat, wind, and light cold exposure, with the main crop ripening in winter and early spring. We recommend it for growers who want a classic cooking lemon for drinks, baking, marinades, and fresh zest.
Lisbon Lemon Tree Care
Plant Lisbon Lemon Tree in spring after frost risk has passed, or in early fall in warm Zones 9 to 11 where roots can settle before cooler weather. Set the tree at the same depth it grew in the nursery pot, spacing outdoor trees 8 to 15 feet apart. Choose a full sun location with 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. Rich, loamy, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH of about 5.5 to 6.5 is best, and citrus roots should never sit in soggy soil. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring after harvest to remove dead, crossing, or crowded branches. protect container trees from frost.
Growing Lisbon Lemon Tree
Lisbon Lemon Tree may begin fruiting in 2 to 3 years with strong light, steady moisture, and warm growing conditions. Harvest lemons when the rind turns fully yellow and the fruit feels firm and heavy for its size. Store fruit at room temperature for a week or refrigerate it longer, and bring patio-grown trees indoors before nights drop near freezing.
Growing Lisbon Lemon Tree in Containers
Lisbon Lemon Tree is a strong patio citrus for sunny decks, greenhouses, and bright indoor winter spaces. Start with a 15 to 20 gallon container with drainage holes and a chunky citrus potting mix. Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring when roots fill the pot or the mix breaks down. In colder zones, overwinter the pot in a cool room (about 50–60°F) with direct light near a south-facing window indoors. Acclimate it gradually when moving it outside for summer, using a rolling caddy to simplify transport.
Watering Lisbon Lemon Tree
Water young Lisbon Lemon Tree deeply when the top 2 inches of soil dry, giving enough moisture to reach the full root ball. Established trees tolerate brief dry periods better, but curled leaves, flower drop, or dry potting mix pulling from the container edge mean it is time for a deeper soak.
Feeding Lisbon Lemon Tree
Feed from spring through early fall with a citrus-specific fertilizer that includes nitrogen, iron, magnesium, and other micronutrients. Apply according to the label every 4 to 6 weeks during active growth, then pause in winter so the tree is not encouraged to make tender new growth during cooler months.
