The Proven Winners ColorChoice® Little Lime® Hydrangea is a smaller more compact version if its bigger brother the Limelight Hydrangea. Although this shrub is smaller in stature, you will be pleasantly surprised with how many flowers this shrub produces! The flowers start off lime green, like you would expect from the name. Then as summer goes by, the flowers begin to have rich pink coloring. The blooms last all the way through fall.

This plant has very strong stems as well, so the flowers are great for cut flower arrangements. This little hydrangea can fit into smaller landscapes and are great in container gardens. We have this planted in our front yard, and it is one of our favorite plants!

Little Lime Hydrangea Care

Prune the Little Lime Hydrangea in late winter or early spring. This paniculata hydrangea blooms on new wood. So a quick trim will encourage new growth, help improve stem strength, and ensure the bush produces an abundance of new flower buds. Plant this shrub in an area of full sun or partial shade for best results. In warmer climates, it is best to plan in an area with afternoon shade if possible. The plant prefers well drained soil to help prevent against root rot. We also recommend applying mulch to help retain moisture and help protect the roots against harsh weather conditions.

If you grow in a container, be sure the plant gets enough water. Pots dry out faster than if the plant was growing in the ground. An easy way to tell if the hydrangea needs more water, is when the leaves start to wilt.

Fertilize the Little Lime Hydrangea in early spring with a slow release fertilizer designed for woody plants such as trees or roses. You can apply an additional round of liquid fertilizer in mid-summer if you would like, but it is not necessary. Use directions as labeled on the container of whatever fertilizer you choose to use.

Little Lime Hydrangea Spacing

Space these shrubs 3 to 5 feet apart, center on center for mass plantings or landscape borders. If you would like to get creative, and plant a Little Lime hedge, plant these 30 to 36 inches apart, center on center. These are also great in garden planters. Do not overcrowd the containers though if you do this. Use the same spacing rules as stated above if you wish to plant more than 1 per container. Most of the time, 1 shrub per container is preferred for best performance of these shrubs.
