When the Little Red Head Indian Pink is grown en masse and blooms, it really is a sight to believe. The botanically named Spigelia marilandica 'Little Red Head' is a stunning native wildflower that produces crimson-red tubular flowers that are tipped yellow. Blooming in June, its flowers open above clumps of glossy green leaves and truly look spectacular. If you want to attract hummingbirds, this perennial will certainly help as Little Red Head is a great source of nectar.
This Indian Pink is hardy and suitable for growing in zones 5 to 9. Naturally found along streams and woodland margins, this perennial is ideal for growing in borders, in a container or as a cut flower. As a low-maintenance perennial, it needs little ongoing care and forms upright clumps of attractive lance-shaped foliage. A great wildlife-friendly perennial for some early summer color.
Little Red Head Indian Pink Care
Little Red Head is versatile and flowers well in either full sun or partial shade. It prefers fertile, free-draining, and slightly acidic soil that is kept on the moist side. For the best show of blooms come June, apply an ericaceous fertilizer. After planting, regular irrigation is needed and on an ongoing basis to maintain a healthy root system.
Care is simple for Little Red Head; cut back and remove its stems after the first frost. When grown in a container, Little Red Head will require more frequent watering than when grown directly in the ground.
Little Red Head Indian Pink Spacing
Once mature, Little Red Head Indian Pink can grow to an eventual 24-28 inches high and 20-24 inches wide. For the best effect, plant Spigelia marilandica in a group with a spacing of 18-20 inches apart.
