When the Little Redhead Indian Pink is grown en masse and blooms, it really is a sight to believe. The botanically named Spigelia marilandica 'Little Redhead' is a stunning native wildflower that produces crimson-red tubular flowers with buttery yellow interiors. Several flowers bloom per each upright stalk during spring and summer. Bright, glossy green, ovate foliage with pointed ends gives the plants more texture and offsets the colorful blooms. This beautiful plant requires little care but offers bold style to an outdoor area. If you want to attract hummingbirds, this perennial will certainly help as Little Red Head is a great source of nectar.
This Indian Pink is hardy and suitable for growing in zones 5 to 9. Naturally found along streams and woodland margins, this perennial is ideal for growing in borders, in a container or as a cut flower. Include the Little Redhead Indian Pink in a mixed bed or create a one-of-a-kind mass planting. The tall flowering stalks add height to a border or work well as a thriller in a container. As a North American native, the Little Redhead Indian Pink thrives with little care once acclimated and is a great wildlife-friendly perennial for some early summer color.
Little Red Head Indian Pink Care
Little Redhead is versatile and flowers well in full sun to partial shade, allowing for flexible placement options in a landscape. It prefers fertile, free-draining, and slightly acidic soil that is kept on the moist side. For the best show of blooms come June, use a slow-release fertilizer in the spring and start the growing season strong. After planting, regular irrigation is needed on an ongoing basis to maintain a healthy root system. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and give the soil a nutritional boost.
Care is simple for Little Redhead; cut back and remove its stems after the first frost. Deadhead the flowers to encourage a second flush of blooms. When grown in a container, Little Red Head will require more frequent watering than when grown directly in the ground.
Little Redhead Indian Pink Spacing
Once mature, Little Redhead Indian Pink can grow to an eventual 24-28 inches high and 20-24 inches wide. For the best effect, plant Spigelia marilandica in a group with a spacing of 18-20 inches apart.
