The Little Spire Russian Sage is a low-maintenance plant with a big visual impact. Botanically named Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Little Spire,' this herbaceous perennial features tall, branching stems dotted with dainty blue and purple flowers. Enjoy the blooms from mid-summer through fall. The flowers are tiny, but Russian Sage is such a prolific bloomer that the entire plant will have a bluish-purple tint.
The tall, wispy stems can stand two feet tall, making this plant a good choice to add height to a mixed bed. It can also enhance a rustic or cottage-inspired border or a low flowering hedge. The Little Spire Russian Sage is well loved by pollinators, including hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Deer and pests generally leave this flowering perennial alone. It grows in zones 5 through 10.
Little Spire Russian Sage Care
The Little Spire Russian Sage loves full sun and will thrive in a spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight. This plant doesn’t have high water needs but performs best with weekly water, especially during a dry spell. Mulch spread around the base will retain moisture. Feed Russian Sage each spring using a balanced plant food.
Trim stems as flowers fade to encourage another flush of blooms. As the summer progresses, the stems can become lanky, so cutting back growth also promotes a dense form. After the first frost, cut all growth to ground level.
Little Spire Russian Sage Spacing
Little Spire Russian Sage has a compact form and reaches 24 to 28 inches tall and 15 to 28 inches wide. Space plants 15 to 28 inches apart to create an interlocking row of flowers and greenery.
