Luminary® Pink Lightning Tall Garden Phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Pink Lightning') ignites flower beds with sizable pink blooms accented by a crisp white star at the center. These upright stems, reaching 30 to 36 inches, become a magnet for butterflies and hummingbirds once midsummer arrives. Its flowers rival others in the Luminary® series for sheer impact, adding bright charm to cottage gardens and border plantings. Its mildew-resistant foliage and extended flowering window make it a compelling choice for any sunlit landscape.
This native North American perennial emits a gentle fragrance and has proven dependable in both heat and moderate drought. Dark green leaves stay attractive throughout the season, allowing the plant’s colorful display to take center stage. Whether planted in containers, arranged as a single highlight, or grouped en masse, Luminary® Pink Lightning Tall Garden Phlox adapts seamlessly to various garden styles. It has earned a solid reputation for reliability and toughness among tall garden phlox varieties.
Luminary® Pink Lightning Tall Garden Phlox Care
Place this phlox in a site with six or more hours of direct light to support vigorous blooming, though partial shade is tolerated. Provide nutrient-rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH for best results. Keep watering moderate and fertilize lightly every other month to support vigorous growth. Proper air circulation is key, so keep plants well spaced and avoid overhead irrigation if possible.
Cut back spent flower clusters just above the foliage to prompt fresh buds and maintain a tidy appearance. Prune stems to a few inches above the ground once the foliage dies back in late fall or early winter. As winter approaches, spread a thick layer of mulch to protect the roots. For container cultivation, select a pot with good drainage and position it where it can receive ample sunlight. Consider moving potted specimens to a sheltered space during the winter.
Luminary® Pink Lightning Tall Garden Phlox Spacing
Separate each plant by 24 to 30 inches for healthy airflow in border or mass plantings. If you opt for a potted specimen, choose a container at least 12 inches wide to give roots enough room.
