Mahogany Fern is a lovely low-maintenance fern. The compact size and beautiful color of new fronds make this plant a must-have for low-light situations or fern collections. Didymochlaena truncatula is native to Central and South America and is an easy-care Maidenhair type of fern with bronze-colored fronds that gradually green as they age. Mahogany fern is also a great outdoor plant year-round for growing zones 9-11.
Best Locations For Growing Mahogany Fern
All Maidenhair types of fern-like high humidity and low light levels. Placement in bathrooms out of direct sun or tucked into the corner of a kitchen is perfect. Mahogany fern can be used for both open and closed terrariums.
Mahogany Fern Sunlight Requirements
Diffused and indirect sun are necessary to keep the fronds green. Medium to lower light levels is the comfort zone for this fern. East and northern exposure will provide the right amount of sunlight.
Mahogany Fern Care
Repotting of Mahogany Fern needs to be done when the roots begin to grow from the bottom of the container. Do not increase the pot size by more than one or two sizes. Pot this fern in soil-based potting soil, which retains moisture and is nutrient rich. Regular pruning of dead or drying fronds can be done anytime of the year. Temperatures below 45 degrees F can be deadly for this plant. If you grow Mahogany Fern outdoors for the summer, bring it indoors well before nighttime temperatures reach 50 F.
Watering Mahogany Fern
When the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry, give the container a thorough watering, letting the excess water drain out the bottom of the pot. Discard any water standing in the saucer after 10-15 minutes. A pebble-lined tray to set the pot on provides drainage and extra humidity. Misting with distilled water is another good way to provide high humidity around the ferns.
Feeding Mahogany Fern
Use a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer for Mahogany Fern. Apply it at half the recommended strength once a month from March through September.
