Mauritius Lychee delivers an early summer crop of pink-red fruit with pearly white flesh, floral fragrance, and a sweet flavor with a light tang. Litchi chinensis 'Mauritius' reaches about 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide in home landscapes, though annual pruning can keep the canopy lower for easier harvest. This tropical fruit tree looks polished, with dense evergreen foliage and handsome clusters that color before picking. In warm climates, fruit typically ripens from May to June, so you can chill a bowl and enjoy peak flavor right as the weather heats up.
Mauritius Lychee Care
Plant Mauritius Lychee in spring once warm weather has settled, choosing a frost-protected site away from harsh wind. Space trees 15 to 20 feet apart in full sun, giving young trees room for a rounded canopy and good airflow. Keep them 10–12 feet from walls, eaves, and overhead lines. Slightly acidic, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.0 to 6.5 is best. Add 2–3 inches of organic mulch to keep the shallow root zone cool, but pull mulch a few inches off the trunk.
Prune after harvest to remove broken growth, reduce crowded interior branches, and keep fruiting wood within reach. Stake young trees in windy sites and train a single trunk with 3–5 well-spaced scaffolds.
Growing Mauritius Lychee
Mauritius Lychee has no standard chill-hour requirement, but mature trees often flower best after a cooler, drier winter period followed by warm spring growth. Fruit typically ripens in late spring to early summer, about 80 to 112 days after flowering depending on weather and location. Harvest clusters when most fruit is pink-red with a little green still showing, then refrigerate soon after picking because lychee skin browns quickly after harvest even when the flesh remains good.
Growing Mauritius Lychee in Containers
Mauritius Lychee can be grown in a large container while young, but it is not the best long-term pot tree if fruit production is the goal. Use a 15 to 25 gallon container filled with a fast-draining mix, such as potting soil mixed with bark and perlite, for early patio culture. Plan to plant it in the ground before the root system becomes crowded and the canopy stalls. Repot only during warm weather, and avoid breaking apart the root ball because lychee roots resent rough handling.
For container companions, use alyssum and basil plants around the rim for flowers and edible value. Good landscape companions include agapanthus and liriope, positioned outside the mulch ring where they will not compete with the tree’s feeder roots.
Watering Mauritius Lychee
Water young Mauritius Lychee with a slow, wide soak that reaches the outer root zone rather than only the trunk area. During hot, dry stretches plan on two thorough soakings per week when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. During bloom and fruit swell, keep moisture even, since dry swings can reduce fruit size while constant wet soil can invite root trouble.
Feeding Mauritius Lychee
Feed lightly in spring after new growth begins with a citrus or tropical fruit fertilizer that includes micronutrients (for example 8-3-9 or 10-10-10). After harvest, a second modest feeding helps the tree rebuild leaves and branch tips for the next cycle, but heavy nitrogen can make too much canopy at the expense of flowering.
