The Merritt’s Supreme Hydrangea, hydrangea macrophylla ‘Merritt’s Supreme’, has large, pink to bluish flowers that arrive in summer and continue into the fall. The color of the flowers is dependent on the soil pH- alkaline soils produce pink blooms, while more acidic soils result in blue flowers. Soils can be amended to produce the desired color. The “mopheads,” as the blooms are called, make excellent cut flowers. Merritt’s makes an outstanding informal hedge or landscape specimen. Beautiful when used in mass plantings.
Merritt’s Supreme Hydrangea Care
Plant in well-drained soil. Water frequently to establish. Plant prefers moist soil, but not waterlogged. If desired, prune after bloom period to avoid loss of next year’s blooms. Fertilize with acid fertilizer if soil is alkaline and if blue flowers are desired.
Merritt’s Supreme Hydrangea Spacing
For informal hedges plant 3 ½ to 4 feet apart, as measured from the center of each plant. For mass plantings or in the shrub border, plant 6 feet apart.
