The versatile Mexican Oregano is both an ornamental shrub and edible herb. The foliage has an intense taste and is often used in Tex-Mex recipes. Typically growing to around 3 to 4 feet tall, you can harvest the leaves to use both for cooking and for making herbal tea. Furthermore, it develops white and yellow flowers that are adored by pollinators.
Mexican Oregano Care
Best planted in the spring or early summer, Mexican Oregano likes to grow in full sun. It can tolerate a range of soil types but requires the substrate to be free draining. With a maximum size of around four feet wide, space each plant around 3 to 4 feet apart. Protect the tender growth from frost.
Mexican Oregano Plant
For the Mexican Oregano to thrive, it needs a minimum of 6+ hours of sunlight per day. Being so tender, Mexican Oregano is often grown as an annual and can put on three feet of growth in a year. In colder parts, you can grow it in a pot and bring it indoors for the winter. For warmer areas, you can cultivate it as a perennial and cut it back by half in the fall to regrow the following year.
When grown in a container, use a free-draining compost mix, as Mexican Oregano struggles in heavy soil. Due to its large size when fully grown, a pot size of 18 to 24 inches is advisable.
Watering Mexican Oregano Plant
Frequent watering is required on planting and until established. Once mature, Mexican Oregano is drought tolerant and only needs occasional irrigation.
Feeding Mexican Oregano Plant
When grown in the ground, Mexican Oregano rarely requires any extra fertilization. However, when grown in a container, you can refresh the compost annually to help replace any lost nutrients.
