- An herb, a succulent and an annual all in 1 plant!
Portulaca, Moss Rose, Wingpod Purslane...all are common names of Portulaca umbraticola, a beautiful low growing sun loving annual which has been a time-honored addition to many gardens throughout the years. Mojave Fuchsia is a deep fuchsia flower with a red center and bright yellow stamens on succulent dark green leaves and is one of five colors available in the Mojave series.
Native to hot regions of North American and Mexico, P. umbraticola thrives as a short-lived perennial in Zones 10a to 11b and an annual in Zones 2-9. Coastal gardeners, this is a salt tolerant annual for your salt prone gardens! It is a long, continuous bloomer that will make a wonderful foreground plant for your cottage garden, borders or edging and make a great cascading plant in large planters where it will trail up to 16 inches.
Mojave Fuchsia Purslane Care
While its parent plant is considered a weed in its native climates, this improved variety will not behave in an unruly manner. Tolerant of heat, drought and salt prone soils, this sun loving annual will also tolerate poor soils. Preferred pH is 6.0 to 6.5. It appreciates moderate watering when dry as it is shallow rooted.. It does not need fertilization and it requires high light to produce blooms. Aphids can be problematic so use of insecticidal soap is recommended.
No deadheading is needed and pinching back is not needed for continuous flowering. Pruning is not required as this variety does not get out of hand. Pair this low mounding/trailing annual with other colors in the Mojave series, and throw a spike of pennistemon as a thriller in a large container. It also pairs well with sedum and creeping zinnias as well as other sun loving annuals.
Mojave Fuchsia Purslane Spacing
Proper spacing will help to alleviate possible insect infestation. Growing 8 to 16 inches tall and spreading 12 to 16 inches wide, give these plants 8 to 10 inches of space between plants. Mojave Fuchsia makes a wonderful ground cover when massed out in your landscape, borders and edgings and compliments many taller annuals in your cottage garden. Don’t miss out on the opportunity for bright pink, easy to care for color in your full sun annual garden.
