- Succulent with continuous pink flowers!
Growing flowers in a garden or container doesn’t get any easier than a succulent that loves heat, tolerates salt, drought, and poor soil, and blooms continuously with no need to trim or deadhead. But that is the beauty of Portulaca Mojave Pink (P. umbraticola). And its other beauty comes from the rosy pink flowers all over the fleshy-leaved stems. The flowers close up at night to save the succulent’s energy, and then open again when the sun comes out.
Just place your portulaca in full sun in a container or in the ground. Since it likes average to poor soil, this short plant (only 4 to 8 inches high) can work as a groundcover in areas where many bedding plants can’t grow. The annual grows and spreads or trails (up to 16 inches) while it keeps blooming with the delicate pink flowers. In a container, use Portulaca Mojave Pink as a filler and spiller to trail over the sides of the pot.
Mojave Pink Purslane Care
Succulents are known for their easy care, and Portulaca Mojave Pink is no exception. The only mistakes are to give it too little sun or too much water and care. Water an established portulaca only when the soil feels dry at the surface. Although the plant handles drought fine, it also can tolerate humid summer days.
There is no need to fertilize your portulaca. It thrives in poor soil, so make sure a container has good drainage before planting your portulaca there. As an annual, Portulaca Mojave Pink will not survive winter, and it is better to start with a new plant each spring.
Mojave Pink Purslane Spacing
When using lots of these portulacas as a mass planting or groundcover, space them about 8 to 10 inches apart so they can grow into one another. Space them closer in pots, depending on the effect you like, and near the edge of the container to fill and spill.
