As its name suggests, the Monarch Prince Charming butterfly bush attracts pollinators to the landscape in regal fashion. This Buddleia features bright pink ten-inch flower spikes that rise above the foliage. The fragrant, honey-scented blooms appear in the heat of summer and continue into fall, especially with a bit of deadheading. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and visitors to the landscape all appreciate this plant.
This fast grower is deer and rabbit resistant and easy to grow. It has an excellent, erect form so it is a stellar option for an informal hedge. Use it in the landscape as a backdrop for smaller perennials. The lance-shaped foliage adds even more attractiveness. Both the flowers and the leaves are used in cut flower arrangements. The Monarch Prince Charming butterfly bush even works well if planted in a very large container.
Monarch Prince Charming Butterfly Bush Care
Position this plant in a site with full sun. The Prince Charming butterfly bush is extremely drought tolerant but will perform best and produce the most flowers with consistent moisture, so water it during extended hot, dry spells. They tolerate a range of soil types and fertility levels as long as drainage is good. It is usually one of the last plants to break dormancy and leaf out in spring, so it requires a bit of patience. Feed annually in late spring once the plant breaks dormancy with a slow-release fertilizer.
Snip off spent flowers to encourage more blooming in late summer and fall. Cut the plant back to about six inches above ground level in late winter.
Monarch Prince Charming Butterfly Bush Spacing
The Monarch Prince Charming butterfly bush grows quickly to reach a height of four to five feet tall with a spread of four to six feet. Space plants four feet apart for a mass grouping or six feet apart to keep them as individuals.
